Western Mobile Telephone was a used car telephone refurbisher in Anaheim, California run by Art Garabedian. He would mate the US Communications heads to much older, refurbished radio drawers and then sell them to end users or small dealers. The maker of the head is unrelated to Western. Pacific Telephone used these heads on their company owned phones, with an annoyingly different access code string for programming. In use they became very hot.

Yaesu FTC2205 Traveler was being marketed by 1982. I worked at a Yaesu dealer at the time and we had them by the summer of '83. A rather impractical item to try to seriously use. Expensive.

Hitachi which was made
with a Western Electric KS # and while intended to go with a
Hitachi drawer, like all first generation production AMPS units,
will run anyone else's radio package. Interesting large display

A Harris head mated to competitor's
radio or the CT1555 Harris drawer was Alpha 40. When mated to the Harris
AL2000, it was the Alpha 2000. Very high quality set.

The first cellular phone was released to the public in 1983 as the DynaTAC 8000x. Cellular phones were in development from 1973 to 1983. These two phones are from 1981, pre-production. Only four units are known to exist.
